You often hear people saying “Be Yourself” as if it is the pinnacle of existence. Personally, I think it’s a bit limiting.

People like the reassurance that comes from being able to categorise you. It helps them know where they stand.

We tend to be categorised by the roles we play.

“Who, the twins? Yes, one’s studying to be a lawyer. The other’s getting married after graduation and moving to the US”

“My wife gave up work to raise our children”

“Henry’s been in Sales for nineteen years!”

This categorisation contains a set of assumptions that get assigned to you and it becomes your job to live up to these expectations. After all, you wouldn’t want to shock anyone or let anyone down would you?

These expectations become your Identity and you become your role.

If you’re feeling unchallenged with that troubling tightness inside you, take a moment to consider the assumptions that you are allowing to be made about you.

Simply adding or redefining a role changes the assumptions assigned to you.

Your expectations of yourself change and as they change you find you’ve changed.

Remember that people are fluid beings and we are constantly evolving as we go through life. Honour your flexibility.

Personal Development from Dubai

British NLP Master Reeta Luthra is in Dubai. My first two years in Dubai were as an entrepreneur in the steel industry. Lots of fun but hard work too. Dubai is a fascinating place with many perspectives to explore. I look forward to sharing them with you.

I was lucky enough to fall into an exciting new venture when I arrived in Dubai from the UK a couple of years ago. I was having so much fun being an entrepreneur that keeping this precious Personal Development site updated became a “I’ll do it tomorrow” black hole.

But then something happened on my webhost server recently – it was hacked or malfunctioned in some way and part of my site got corrupted. I only had a partial back-up and hated to see my creation demolished overnight.

As I have undergone so many new experiences and furthered my own personal development over the last few years, it seems appropriate to grab this opportunity to start anew.

Through my partial back-up, I can incorporate some of my popular articles from the previous version. As always, I remain open to your feedback and thoughts on the type of information you’d like to see and invite you to contact me. I had tremendous feedback from the survey I had up previously and those ideas are all noted.

Since I am settled in Dubai for the foreseeable future, this will no doubt influence some of the things I write about.

So, even though fate forced my hand in the form of the server malfunction, I am delighted to bring you this new version of the site. I hope you find something here that makes your day better!

Tip of the Day: Unlike me, if you need to start anew, do it on your terms rather than wait for something to get damaged before you do something about it.

Or if you are a mere mortal like me, just seize your opportunities when you recognise them!
